Bio-based polymer binders are a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based binders commonly used in paint formulations. These binders are derived from renewable resources such as plants, trees, or agricultural waste, reducing the environmental impact associated with conventional paints. Some key challenges are associated with the use of bio-based binders and/or raw materials. Addressing these challenges requires a multidisciplinary approach that combines expertise in chemistry, materials science, and paint technology. Formulators must balance the sustainability benefits of biobased materials with the need for consistent performance, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance. In this presentation bio-based technologies are presented and their challenges in formulation of their paints.

Related to the EU Green Deal, the EU has implemented chemical emission reduction targets, aiming for zero pollution in 2050. For 2030, the ambition is a 55 % emission reduction compared to 1990. Emission from solvents is widely deviating depending on the different regions within the EU, but the chemical industry should explore all possible reductions. Relating this to the coating industry, we should take our responsibility, and assess whether in the current systems in use, reduction of emissions would be feasible. This generates the question: do we need solvent in our coating applications?
This presentation is focusing on the use of coatings for wood, more exactly, the use of Decorative Coatings for exterior wood in the Northwest European market. We compare the different relevant coating technologies for this segment and assess the suitability for current and future use.

Bis-COOH-functional pyrrolidones (DPCA), were studied in model polyesters through reaction with 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol (BEPD) and compared with polyesters based on phthalic acid (PA), isophthalic acid (IPA), 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and adipic acid (AA). Use of PCAs in alkyd synthesis was studied and judged as feasible. In those cases, alkyd emulsions based on PCAs derived from aniline or cyclohexylamine showed increased hardness of the resulting coatings, whereas the coating derived from an alkyd based on PCA made from n-hexylamine showed a lower hardness. An alkyd emulsion with a potentially 100% bio-based content was made without obtaining a serious reduction of coating properties like hardness.

BASF’s sustainability initiatives evolve around three main pillars: climate protection, circular economy and sustainable solutions. This presentation will highlight how BASF contributes to lowering CO2 emissions and its impacts on the architectural coatings industry from bio-based, recyclable and mass-balanced options. As a further practical example, high solids acrylic polymer dispersions technology aids in improving trim paint performance enabling the further shift of solvent- to waterborne and will be introduced in more technical detail.
